Chapter 13 – Petra

Chignon, Diggle, and Charlie arrived at Petra early the next morning. About half the brothers and sisters who lived there came to greet them. The others were still out scouting the Waspic to locate the Lamb. Many dorilyns who had come from other areas to be in the Lamb’s presence had returned to their homes at Upper Pond, Jasmine Point, and Scarlet Pierra.

The dorilyns held all members of the Elect in high esteem. It made no difference to them that Chignon was only a junior. To them she was of the royal house, and they treated her with the dignity afforded one of her race. Her first view of the dorilyns’ city was unimpressive. The Green was lush and inviting, but the openings in the east side of the valley looked dark and mysterious. She was not prepared for what met her inside. The holes opened up into an extraordinary cavern, more like a banquet hall than a cave. It was as bright as the day outside. The floor was covered with mats woven from a soft green fiber called gligon. The mats completely covered the floor and gave the impression that the Green had moved inside along with the travelers.

The walls were dressed in yellow hangings, which looked like pages from a child’s storybook. Each panel was an enchanting picture of dorilyn life. Above the panels the walls grew into great arches, which spread out in the ceiling like branches of a tree. The lower part of the arches came down in gnarled spirals, some into the walls to be hidden behind the storybook pages, and some into columns that looked like tree trunks. The whole place made Chignon feel like she had just stepped to a magical wood. Many dorilyns filled the cavern. They were solemnly setting out a marvelous spread in her honor. A lightly carved horseshoe-shaped table was being laden with all manner of vegetable and cheese dishes. As the dorilyns placed silver bowls, rounded with food, upon the table, Chignon had time to look for the source of the light. There were no lamps that she could see: no light-flies doing their job upon the walls of the banquet hall. There were no windows or light shafts in view.

Diggle bounced his way around the hall calling the dorilyns to arms.

“Drag out your spears, sharpen your arrows, prepare yourselves for battle! How can we eat when there is so much to do? You there, Chartreuse, what is all this gaiety when our Lord is in trouble? We are wasting time.”

While Charlie muttered, “’twon’t do no good no how, Diggle. E’s gone. Gone.” He lamented. “Can’t rescue somebody what’s gone. We just got to get ready for the end of the world. I knew it couldn’t last. I said was too good to be true. Won’t do no good, I’m tellin’ ya.” He addressed Diggle once again, but Diggle wasn’t listening. “I knew it,” Charlie muttered again and walked toward a comfortable looking corner, nursing his bruises and talking to himself.
